Kitreena heard the terms “Apa Cher?” on TV and from her friends at Pak Ngah Production.
Kitreena: Mommy, what is ‘apa cher’?
Mommy: Aperture?
Kitreena: Yeah.
Mommy: You mean aperture on a camera?
Kitreena: I don’t know, it’s in bahasa.
Mommy: No, it’s not. It’s in English. It’s a term in photoghraphy. Aperture.
Kitreena: No! The kids at my dance class always ask me ‘apa cher’.
Mommy: Ohhhh! Apa cher for ‘apa cerita’!
Kitreena: What’s ‘apa cerita’?
Mommy: It means like ‘what’s up’ or ‘what’s the story’.
Kitreena: Why can’t they say ‘apa cerita’?
Mommy: Because they are lazy and they are cacat.
Kitreena: What’s cacat?
Mommy: They are disabled in the brain. They can’t say words that have more than one syllable.
Kitreena: Ha ha ha! But really, in English you can’t say ‘what’s the store‘ for ‘what’s the story’. A story is a story, not a store.
Mommy: Ah well, sweetheart. That’s why I am writing a book about my people.
