We were on our way to Yamaha for his piano class, just the two of us in the car.
Edrick: Mommy, I think I don’t wanna go to school anymore.
Mommy: What do you mean you think you don’t wanna go to school anymore?
Edrick: I think I don’t wanna stay in school anymore.
Mommy: What do you mean, baby?
Edrick: I just don’t feel like it anymore.
Mommy: But why, sweetheart? What happened at school?
Edrick: I am tired of all the hard work at school.
Mommy: What hard work?
Edrick: Writing and writing and counting and counting and division and multiplication. All the hard work is harrrrrddd.
Mommy: Okkkaayyyy. So what are you going to do if you don’t wanna go to school anymore?
Edrick: I don’t know.
Mommy: You have to do something. Everybody has got to be doing something, ya know?
Edrick: Like what?
Mommy: Like… working. If you don’t wanna go to school, it looks like you have to start looking for a job.
Edrick: *is shocked and has his eyes and his mouth wide open*
Mommy: But you have to be really good at something, only then will someone hire you to work with them.
Edrick: But I am not old enough to work.
Mommy: So what are you going to do in the meantime, then? Until you are old enough to work?
Edrick: How many more years, Mom?
Mommy: Ohhh ten. Maybe twelve years.
Edrick: That’s longgggggg!
Mommy: Yup, so what are you going to do for twelve years if you are not in school?
Edrick: I am not sure.
Mommy: Look, if you stay in school, you get smarter and smarter every year. And when you finish school, you move on to university to become even smarter. And then because of your smartness, the university will give you a degree. With your smartness degree, you are able to get a great job and really good pay. Thennnn, you can do whatever you want with yourself and your life. And your own money.
Edrick: Okay okay okay! I’ll stay in school and go to university, Mom.
Mommy: Ohhhh that’s the best news I have ever heard in my life!
Edrick: Are you sure I can do WHATEVER I want when I have my own job and my own money?
Mommy: Absolutely sure!
Edrick: Okay then, Mommy. I will go to school everyday from now on.
Mommy: You have been going to school everyday, baby.
Edrick: Oh yeah!
Mommy: *thinks that her son would make a good lawyer because WHATEVER she thinks can, and will be used against her soon or sooner*
