I was sitting at the round dining table, listening to Deja Vu by Shila Amzah when Edrick stopped by on his way upstairs. It was just before bedtime, 1930hrs.

.

Edrick: Mom… *he looks at my face looking for words*

Mommy: What is it sweetheart?

Edrick: Mom, is it okay if you don’t listen to sad songs?

Mommy: Ohhh? Oh okay.

Edrick: I think it’s making me feel uncomfortable.

Mommy: Oh I’m sorry about that, sayang. All right, I’ll listen to something else.

Edrick: And Mom, I think sad songs make YOU feel uncomfortable too.

Mommy: Oh don’t worry about me, I’m okay. I’ll be okay.

Edrick: Okay, but I think you should keep sad songs away, Mom.

Mommy: Yes, sir! I sure will.

.

He pulled me into his arms, hugged me longer than usual, said his goodnight, his I-love-you, his don’t-let-the-big-bug-bite routine and went to bed.

.

I was left feeling so loved, and I knew… it wasn’t the sad song that made me cry.

.

My Little Big Man who has the biggest heart.

Yes Today

Forty-Niner.

I once read…
“Write injuries in sand, kindnesses in marble.”

.

I guess that’s why I write.

..

And I was reminded of this unrelated children’s song:
In a cavern in a canyon,
excavating for a mine,
dwelt a miner forty-niner,
and his daughter, Clementine.

.

One of Kitreena’s teddy bears is called Clementine.

Siri Bercakap Dengan Edrick XLII

Anak MommyExactly like last year, shopping for Baju Melayu for this anak mat saleh took only 15 minutes at Metrojaya The Curve. On the way out from the store going into Borders, to distract him from his thirst, we had this conversation.

.

Mom: Do you know how much your baju raya is?
Edrick: No. How much, Mom?
Mom: Forty-one ringgits and ninety-nine cents.
Edrick: What?! That is almost forty-two ringgits Mom!
Mom: Yup.
Edrick: That would take me longer than the puasa month to pay!
Mom: Yes, it would. But don’t worry, I’ll pay for it sayang.
Edrick: Are you sure, Mom?
Mom: Oh yeah, I’m very sure. Your allowance is only one ringgit per day. Don’t worry about it. It’s raya anyway. I’ll pick up the baju cost.
Edrick: How much is YOUR allowance per day, Mom?
Mom: Oh my allowance is enough to pay for your baju and Kitreena’s baju.
Edrick: What about YOUR baju?
Mom: Nah, I’ll just go bugil this Raya.
Edrick: Hahahahaha! Nooo, Mommm! Don’t go bugil. I can pay for your baju.
Mom: Hahahahaha! You are too embarrassed to have a bugil Mom on Raya huh?
Edrick: Yeaaaah. But I love you, Mom.
Mom: Hahahaha! Of course.

Being There

It was just a routine washroom visit at the mall before going home. Edrick went to the Gents. Kitreena and I went to the Ladies. But as I was almost done, I heard Edrick screaming in fear, “Mommmmm! Mommmyyy! Mommmyyy! Help meee! Mommmmyyy! Helpppp! Mommmyyy help meee!”

.

I did what any Mom would do.

.

Storming out of the Ladies and storming into the Gents, I had no care whose flies went flying! I pushed the door open and pulled my son into my arms and could immediately feel his heartbeat against my tummy. Edrick was in tears. Kitreena was there too, almost in tears. In the Gents. Soon after calming Edrick (and myself) down, I asked him what happened and after listening to his explanation, I quickly demonstrated to him what to do next time.

.

The water closet doors are different from those at any other malls we know. The doors pull inward to open, but there is no handle to pull it by from the inside unless you are tall enough to reach for the hook. And Edrick is not tall enough to reach it. The door was a bit tight and he panicked when he couldn’t get the door opened. I almost wanted to just stay there for my son, but he calmed right down and told me he was okay. Only then that I remembered that I left my handbag/handbox in the Ladies!

.

Driving home tonight, I found myself taken back to IKEA in Moscow when we were still a complete family. The memory was so clear I thought I was in 2009 when I had this strange thought… that my job as a Mom was made a bit easier having a girl as the first child and a boy second. Washroom visit with a young child was going to be Daddy’s duty. “Yay!” I thought then.

.

And then it was 2010 and things changed.

.

Tonight, a night in 2013, I am writing this, thinking… maybe I should start looking for someone who could be there for me while I am being there for me Monchies. But the thought didn’t stay long. Nor did it sit well. I came home counting my blessings that my children have their Mommy and Daddy. And both are ME!

.

Keeping them close....

Enough Is…

For some reason…
Today I got thinking of a parenting story my Mom once told me.

.

She got a call one day from a teacher who caught my brother stealing money from his friend. It was a two-ringgit-crime. And it was 1992 or a year after. A two-ringgit-crime was huge for a ten-year-old boy. Any-amount-of-ringgit-crime was huge in our family. She couldn’t say a word and was so anxious waiting for my brother to come home.

.

My Mom didn’t say much to my brother when he got home from school. She sat him down after feeding him lunch and all she asked was, “What is it that I have not given you enough?” And then she hugged her son. She hugged him and rubbed his back, asking him the same question very very gently.

.

My brother broke down and finally told Mom that all he wanted was her attention.

.

I remember the story to this day and when Edrick is not being himself, a tight squeeze and a back rub is all that he wants.

.

I know.

.

All that he wants...

While waiting for Kitreena to finish with her Istana Dance at Pak Ngah Studio the weekend before puasa, Edrick wanted an early supper at the nearby Mamak. A Roti Telur supper. Since it wasn’t busy at all, Edrick’s Roti Telur came in no time at all.

.

Mommy: How’s your Roti Telur, Monch? Sadap kah?

Edrick: Deliiiiiiiicious! Mom, this roti tow-lorrr sure tastes like roti canai and egg.

Mommy: Huh? Do you know what Roti Telur is?

Edrick: Roti tow-lorrr is a roti canai cooked with an egg.

Mommy: Du’uhhhhh!

Edrick: Oh yeah. Tow-lorrr is egg.

Mommy: Double du’uhhhhh!

Edrick: Hehehehehehe. Sorry Mom. I forgot.

Mommy: You aaaa! So old man bah!

.

Malaysianization process of me Monchies’ language is not so delicious these days. 🙂

Tastes like....

It was Wednesday, six o’clock in the morning. Edrick knocked on the door gently and came in for our daily good morning wishes and kisses. I was away for training in Penang for four days and just got home the night before.

.

Mommy: Hiiiii sayanggg, good morrrning! How are you doooing? I missed you soooo much! *mwahhh mwahhh mwahhh huggy wooggy boogie*

Edrick: I am great, Mom. How are you doing? Did you have a good sleep?

Mommy: I slept like a log and ohhh, I feel good!

Edrick: Awesome. Errr… Mommm, are my eyebrows too bushy?

Mommy: Hahhh? *but she hears him loud and clear*

Edrick: Do you think my eyebrows too bushy?

Mommy: Your eyebrows? *but she hears her son loud and clear*

Edrick: Yeah, do you think my eyebrows too bushy?

Mommy: *dumbfounded but has to come up with a real quick response at six o’clock in the morning* Uhhh…

Edrick: *touches his eyebrows, bulges his eyes looking for an answer* Are they?

Mommy: No, they’re not. I think they look good just the way they are.

Edrick: So, you don’t think I should pluck ’em or sum-fing?

Mommy: Heavens no! You wouldn’t look like you if you did that!

Edrick: Yeaaah…I think you’re right, Mom. Okayyy, see you downstairs at breakfast. Bye!

.

I couldn’t go back to sleep. The question was quite a wake-up call.
Was I gone too long?

.

Bright eyes and bushy eyebrows.

Rub-A-Dub-Dub

A little rub on her forehead and a gentle touch of brushing her hair with my fingers was enough to make her feel good. It was a scorching hot afternoon and there were just the two of us in the car waiting for Edrick to finish his after-school guitar class.

.

Kitreena: Mom, you told me your Dad used to do this when you were little.

Mommy: Yup, and it was enough to put me to sleep.

Kitreena: Oh yeaaaaa… I am falling asleep here.

Mommy: I know.

There was a long pause, and there was the look on her face again. The look I have not written about for so long. Too long.

Kitreena: So Mommm…

Mommy: Here we go, I knew you were going to ask me a question.

Kitreena: *chuckles* When you get married again… what kind of man would you like to be your husband?

Mommy: “When“? You mean… “if” I get married again. Right?

Kitreena: No, when you get married again. You are going to get married again, aren’t you?

Mommy: I don’t know. I might not.

Kitreena: Awwww well, okay. Let’s say you are going to remarry… what kind of man do yo want?

Mommy: *feels almost embarrassed* I don’t know.

Kitreena: Are you going to marry an Asian man, or a Caucasian man?

Mommy: Does it matter, baby?

Kitreena: No, Mom. Not really. As long as he loves you.

Mommy: As long as he loves me and my kids.

Kitreena: I think you should marry a man who would give you the forehead rub. Sure feels good, Mom.

Mommy: Hahahaha yeah, you are right! I should!

It is known, that I don’t like silly questions. Therefore, I have now taken one step higher and more divine in not liking silly questions. I have become creative in answering them.

.

I give sillier answers.

Kilauan emas di pagi hari Enida...

.

06:30am Monday of January 14th, 2013 — at Cucina Mesra table — Edrick was eating his breakfast and I went straight for the Nescafé Gold jar to make myself some… duh, coffee.

.

Edrick: Mommy, are you gonna make yourself some coffee?

Mommy: *turns to look at Edrick with a BIG smile on her face all ready with a very very silly answer and says* No! I’m not going to make myself some coffee. I’m going to make SIRAP BANDUNG!

Edrick: Hahahahahahahahahaha Mommmmmm!

Mommy: How’s that for a silly answer Edrick?

Edrick: That was a good one, Mom. Hahaha a very good one!

Mommy: Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! *tells herself, her day was made — thanks to a silly question*

.

Can't leave home without it. Well, apa susah? Buy lah some more.

It was late, and we were still talking about the Mayans and the 21122012-belief on the way home from picking up Bibik at the airport on December 21st, last year.

.

Edrick: Mom, are  you sure today’s not the doom’s day?

Enida: Ohhh it’s pretty late now for this world to end. It’s almost midnight.

Edrick: And what’s gonna happen tomorrow if today is not the doom’s day?

Enida: I will have to do laundry tomorrow. And you have to help.

Edrick: Arrrggghhh pickles!

.

Penawar luka di hati Mommy... Kitreena looked at me and I looked at Kitreena. Kitreena rolled her eyes to Edrick’s old curse word. And I knew even if the world came to an end that night, I had my angels with me.
